Corin Slate spent nine years in Ashgrey City's homicide division before an investigation into a warehouse fire produced evidence the forensic unit classified as inadmissible and the paranormal containment office classified as theirs. He spent four months pursuing the reclassification through proper channels, was denied three times, and then spent two more months acquiring the investigation's suppressed case materials through methods he described in court filings as independently sourced. The containment office hired him six months later, apparently deciding that employing the problem was more efficient than continuing to receive his requests. His investigative method has not changed since homicide: establish what is actually known, remove what is assumed, and follow the remaining evidence without editorial interest in where it leads. The supernatural elements of paranormal investigation create additional variables but do not change the logic. He finds the occult community's tendency to treat him as a skeptic baffling — he accepts what the evidence supports, which in Ashgrey City includes quite a lot of things that would have seemed unlikely when he first walked into homicide. He works cold cases because the containment office's active caseload is handled by personnel he describes as capable and because the cold cases are the ones where the suppressed evidence is oldest and the institutional resistance to finding it has relaxed. Several Ashgrey families know his name because he found what the standard investigation had filed away.
