Biography

Toren Ash entered Emberpeak not as a prodigy but as the student who refused to go down. He lost his first three sanctioned duels in the same week, asked for extra mat time each night, and returned to each opponent when the schedule permitted, fighting differently each time. By the end of the first year, the instructors had stopped watching him for failure and started watching him to see what he had figured out. His nickname came from a third-year incident when a training fire got out of control during an outdoor duel and Toren walked into it to drag a downed opponent clear. He emerged with scorched training whites and ash-grey hair that never quite returned to its original color. The school's healers said the heat exposure accelerated a dormant resistance trait. Toren just asked when the next duel was scheduled. As an opponent he is a wall that moves toward you. He absorbs punishment without rewarding it, reads incoming force to redirect rather than simply resist, and keeps enough in reserve to punish the moment an attacker overextends. He does not finish fights quickly. He finishes them completely.
